Add Name Anchors Utility #3

Table of Contents

Patty Lindsay

Purpose

This page will add name anchor tags to surnames that can be identified by strings of characters preceeding and succeeding the surnames. The surnames can be upper, lower or mixed case. You specify the string of characters to be found before and after each surname or list of surnames.

It is important that the identity strings are not found elsewhere on the page. If the identity strings exist elsewhere it can confuse the utility and cause words that are not surnames to be identified as surnames. In some cases where the identity strings exist in pairs in a few places elsewhere on the page the utility can be used and then the extraneous name anchor tags can be removed manually.

You have the option of indexing all words in the text between the identity strings as surnames, the first word in the text, or the last word in the text.

How to use this page

  1. Enter the URL of the page to be indexed:

  2. Select the post type of the page being indexed. Post type:

  3. Enter the starting number for the name anchor tag names:
Use this field if you are running any of the add anchor utilities more than once against the same URL. Enter one more than the last tag added by the previous utility.

  4. Enter the the beginning identity string:

This is the string of characters that proceed each surname or list of surnames.

  5. Enter the the ending identity string:

This is the string of characters that follows each surname or list of surnames.

  6. Indicate which words in the text between the identity strings to index.

  7. Press "Submit" when you have entered the above.

  8. After you press "Submit", you will get a page with name anchor tags added to the surnames. Use your browser's "Save As" option to save the results as an HTML page.

WARNING: HTML editors like Composer and PageMill have been known to "scramble" the name anchor tags. (The </A> tag gets moved from after the surname where it belongs to before the surname.) I recommend that you use a plain text editor (such as WordPad) to edit any files containing Surname Helper name anchor tags. When in doubt, copy the file first and check it after you edit it.
