Extract Surnames

Purpose

The rules used to determine which "words" are "surnames" are:

• A word is defined as a series of characters separated by by spaces or punctuation.

• The word must contain only the following characters: A thru Z, _, -, and those listed on this page.

• The letters must all be capitals.

• There must be more than 2 of the above letters.

Examples of words that would be considered surnames:

• BROWN
• O'LEARY
• BROWN-SMITH
• BÔHN
• USGENWEB

Examples of words that would NOT be considered surnames:

• Brown
• McVicker
• <TITLE>
• BôHN
• USGenWeb

How to use this page

1. Enter the URLs of the pages to be searched for surnames. To save yourself some typing, enter the beginning part that is the same for each URL in the lefthand box and the middle part that changes for each URL in the middle box. Then choose the appropriate ending in the righthand box.

   Note: What you enter in "First Part of URLs" is the same thing that you will enter in the "Index link Base URL" when you register your site.

   Example:

   First Part of URLs	Part of URL that changes	.HTML or .HTM
   www.rootsweb.com/~ohgreene/	query001	.htm
   	query002

2. Press "Submit" when you have entered all the URLs.

3. After you press "Submit", you will get a page with just the extracted surnames. Use your browser's "Save As" option to save the results as a file.

4. Then use the "Back" button on your browser to return here.
